Local Attractions

The old town or “Paese Vecchio” is worth a visit when you’re on holiday at Porto Ercole. In ancient times, this little town was protected by its fortresses, Forte Filippo, Forte Stella, Forte Santa Catherina and La Rocca. You’ll have an unbelievable view of the yachts, and bay from the Paese Vecchio. The Strada Panorámica has breathtaking views, and small beaches are also worth visiting.

Behind Porto Ercole and a stretch of beautiful panoramic cliffs is Forte Stella. This watchtower is a 16th-century military engineering masterpiece named for its 6-pointed star shape. From here, you have a view from the southern shore of the Argentario to Civitavecchia in Lazio.

Another must-see is Forte Filippo, which dates back to the 16th century and retains its grandeur intact with its four bastions set in a moat carved into the rock.

The artist Caravaggio, famous for his Baroque paintings, was exiled by the Pope and died in Porto Ercole in 1610 on his way back to Rome. His remains were buried in the church, and here you can also see one of the artist’s best works.

For lovers of fine white sand, there is the Feniglia beach which stretches for 12km. Hungry for something to eat? Come to the Michelin-starred II Pellicano Restaurant, where you can taste the delicious local dishes of the Chef with the local organic products of the season.

The History

In ancient times the family of the Roman emperor Nero built a villa for residential use not far from Porto Santo Stefano. Later the area was inhabited by the families of the papal nobility. The fame of Porto Ercole started at the beginning of the 1960s when the Roman and Florentine bourgeoisie decided to choose the fishing village as a vacation destination and built luxury villas and houses. Then came Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Dutch monarchy in the 1970s.  The construction of their famous estate, The Happy Elephant, in Porto Ercole officially made the Silver Coast “the promontory of kings”.

New Faces

After the nobility, new faces began to arrive: those of cinema and music, both Italian and overseas.

Much to the paparazzi’s delight, such stars as Anita Ekberg, Ava Gardner, Sofia Loren, Gregory Peck, Marcello Mastroianni, and Frank Sinatra came to the area. It is even rumoured that Greta Garbo bathed naked in Santa Liberata!

In the last 60 years, this ancient fishing village has become the summer meeting place of the international jet set because of its unique beauty and guaranteed privacy.
